In March 1991, approximately 100 hikers simultaneously took over the towns of Ñuñunhuayco and Patahuasi in the district of Cangallo. During this PCP-SL incursion, 8 community members were killed in Ñuñunhuayco. This event is part of the continuation of violence in the area during the 1988-1991 period, when the PCP-SL tried to maintain its presence in the region despite the weakening of its organization. The attack took place in a context of intensification of the internal armed conflict in the province of Cangallo.
