In 1991, an armed confrontation occurred between the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and the Peruvian Army at the Port of Mantaro, on the Huallaga River. The subversives ambushed the military forces as they attempted to cross the river to Mantaro, attacking them from positions on the hill. The attack resulted in significant casualties for the Army, including the death of captains and lieutenants. According to testimonies, there were no deaths on the PCP-SL side in this confrontation, while law enforcement forces suffered multiple casualties.
