Natives join the CAD of Puerto Alegre

In 1991, Shipibo-Conibo native communities from Lake Imiria and surrounding areas joined the Self-Defense Committee (CAD) of Puerto Alegre as a sub-base to fight the Shining Path, after repeatedly rejecting Shining Path attempts to impose their laws and organization on them.

In 1991, the native communities of the area, particularly the Shipibo-Conibo of Lake Imiria, decided to join the Self-Defense Committee (CAD) of the hamlet of Puerto Alegre as a sub-base to combat subversion. This decision was made after PCP-Sendero Luminoso repeatedly tried to impose its laws and organize committees in the native communities, meeting constant resistance. The natives had rejected the Shining Path incursions that sought to organize them under their laws, refusing to form committees and asking them to respect their way of life. The CAD of Puerto Alegre became an important force of resistance against the Shining Path's Organized Committees and Open Popular Committees in the region.
