Start of the Military Campaign Fernando Valladares

MRTA military campaign in San Martin during 1991 aimed at criticizing the policies of the Fujimori government, which included multiple simultaneous raids on cities in the department and the taking of police hostages.

In 1991, the Northeastern Front (FNO) of the MRTA initiated the 'Fernando Valladares Military Campaign', whose objective was to criticize the economic and political conditions imposed by the government of Alberto Fujimori. During this campaign they carried out some important military actions, highlighting the simultaneous incursion on May 10 in Juanjuí, Tarapoto, Saposoa, Moyobamba and Rioja. After the attack on Rioja, they took nine policemen hostage and held them captive for a few days in the Pongo de Caynarachi camp to draw the attention of various international organizations. The campaign culminated with an attack on Juanjuí on December 24, 1991 under the command of (c) Rolando and (c) Evaristo, which resulted in six policemen and one civilian dead, fifteen wounded, and the burning of police premises and commercial looting.
