This reorganization occurred in a context where both the MRTA and the PCP-SL were practically defeated by the end of 1992, although they maintained some limited operational capacity. The district of Pariahuanca had been the scene of armed confrontations between the MRTA and the PCP-SL since 1987, when both groups disputed control of the area.
