18 killed in Chumbivilcas

In December 1990, 18 murders were recorded in Chumbivilcas, an event that, along with other discoveries of mass graves, raised concerns about human rights violations by the State.

In December 1990, 18 murders were registered in the province of Chumbivilcas. This event, together with the discovery of the mass grave in Chillccahuico and the discovery of a clandestine cemetery apparently used by PNP groups, created a context of concern about the government's respect for human rights. Up to that date, 4,800 cases of disappearances had been reported in the country. Subsequently, in May 1991, through Supreme Decree 024-91-DE/SGP, the state of emergency was extended for sixty days in the provinces of Chumbivilcas, Canas, Espinar and Canchis in Cuzco.
