Ricardo, commander of the Northeastern Front of the MRTA, was captured for the second time in Iquitos on November 12, 1990. This capture occurred shortly after the III Central Unity Committee decided in September 1990 to name Evaristo as general commander of the FNO, relegating Ricardo from his leadership position. Ricardo had assumed the General Command of the FNO in April 1990, after his release in January of the same year from his first capture in Tarapoto on January 23, 1988. During his period as commander, the FNO reached a total of five hundred combatants distributed in eight control zones.
