Murder of Laurentino Mendoza Janampa
Laurentino Mendoza Janampa, President of the Ronda Campesina and Community Prosecutor of Pucurhuay, was assassinated with a shot to the back of the head on October 29, 1990 in the city of Cerro de Pasco by militants of the PCP-SL.
Laurentino Mendoza Janampa was President of the Ronda Campesina and Community Prosecutor of the community of Pucurhuay, Ticlacayán district, Pasco province. In May 1988, after a confrontation between a military patrol and a group of hikers in Pucurhuay, the villagers formed the Civil Defense Committee (CDC) and elected Laurentino Mendoza Janampa as president. A few months later, on October 29, 1990, he was shot in the back of the head in the city of Cerro de Pasco. His execution was part of the PCP-SL strategy of "annihilating" local leaders from other districts who were passing through the capital city.
