On August 16, 1990, the Tupacamarista Army (ET) of the Northeastern Front of the MRTA took the city of Moyobamba with approximately 300 subversives. This action was part of a series of spectacular armed operations carried out during 1990, when the FNO had managed to increase its strength to 500 combatants and consolidate 8 zones of control. The capture of Moyobamba took place in a context of military strengthening of the MRTA after the escape of Victor Polay (c) Rolando from the Canto Grande prison in July 1990. This operation was one of the most important actions of 1990, together with the seizures of Picota, Saposoa and Yurimaguas.
