Escape from Canto Grande prison
Mass escape of MRTA militants from the maximum security prison of Canto Grande in Lima, including their leader Víctor Polay Campos 'Rolando'. The escapees later reinforced the operations of the Northeastern Front in San Martin.
On July 12, 1990, there was an escape from the Canto Grande maximum security prison in Lima. Among the escapees was Víctor Polay Campos, alias 'Rolando', leader of the MRTA. The guerrillas who escaped from this prison later joined the Northeastern Front (FNO) of the MRTA in San Martin, reinforcing their military operations in the region. This escape had a significant impact on the strengthening of MRTA's operational capabilities in the department of San Martin during the second half of 1990.
