Attack on SAIS Sollocota and market of Azángaro
On July 10, 1990, the PCP-SL attacked the SAIS Sollocota and the Azángaro market, killing 12 people in total (7 peasants in Sollocota and 5 in the market). This event marked the beginning of the decline of the Shining Path actions in Puno.
In the early morning of January 20, 1990, the Main Force of the PCP-SL headed by Juan Carlos Olivares attacked the SAIS Sollocota with 30 of its activists, resulting in the murder of 7 peasants. That same day, during an attack on the Azángaro market, 5 additional people were killed. This confrontation marked a turning point, since from this moment on PCP-SL actions began to decrease in the region. The attacks were part of the Shining Path strategy of razing associative enterprises in the provinces of Azángaro and Melgar.
