Escape of 47 MRTA prisoners from Castro Castro Prison

On July 9, 1990, 47 MRTA prisoners escaped from Castro Castro Prison through a tunnel. This group included all the important leaders captured to date, with the exception of Peter Cárdenas, who was released shortly after his capture. This escape represented a serious setback for counter-subversive efforts, since the captures of important MRTA leaders made in previous years were lost.
