House raid in Monterrico Norte and capture of DAO

Raid on PCP-SL house in Monterrico with capture of DAO and key documentation

On June 1, 1990, the GEIN achieved its first important accomplishment. The house located at 459 Calle 2, Monterrico Norte urbanization, where Abimael Guzmán was staying until a few days before, was raided. The Department of Organizational Support (DAO), a central apparatus whose main mission was to organize party events and relay the directives of the Central Directorate, operated out of that house. Two instances that depended on the central leadership of the PCP-SL fell: the DAO, in charge of lawyer Elvia Nila Sanabria (Juana) and the Party Support Group (GAP), in charge of Carlos Torres Mendoza (David). María Sybilla Arredondo Guevara, widow of the writer José María Arguedas, was also among those arrested. A list with pseudonyms, telephone numbers and addresses for contacts with members of the central apparatus of the PCP-SL was found in the house. Minister Mantilla declared that for the PCP-SL it was the beginning of the end.
