Razing in Yahuarmachay

Arrasamiento perpetrated by members of the Peruvian Army in the town of Yahuarmachay, Ayahuanco, in May 1990, resulting in the murder of 47 people.

In May 1990, the town of Yahuarmachay, Ayahuanco district, was razed to the ground. Members of the Peruvian Army perpetrated a massacre in which 47 people were killed. This event took place during the period of intensification of the internal armed conflict between 1988-1991, when there was a significant increase in violence by both the armed forces and the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. The razing of Yahuarmachay represents one of the most serious cases of human rights violations committed by State agents in the Ayahuanco area during this period.
