This murder occurred in the context of the PCP-SL's national offensive, which significantly increased the death toll in the provinces of Tayacaja and Churcampa. The victims were accused of collaborating with the military, an accusation that was systematically used by the subversives to justify their selective assassinations against alleged collaborators of the forces of law and order. Two months after the murder of this couple, on June 15, 1990, the subversives also assassinated the governor of the district of La Merced under the same accusation.
