Attack on Sonomoro with burning of young girl

Shining Path burned family with gasoline in Sonomoro, 10 year old girl survived.

Shining Path attacked Sonomoro in the afternoon. A female terrorist captured a family and doused them with gasoline, then set fire to the car and people. Esmeralda Carhuamaca Romero, 10 years old, ran out with fire on her back and managed to put it out by throwing herself on the ground at the school. Her mother and sisters were also attacked. The girl's testimony describes the terror she experienced: 'my mother took us running to the farm but they caught up with us in the bush... they sprayed water on us... I thought it was water, but then they set the car on fire and us too'.
