General elections first round
General elections with defeat of the divided left and second round for Vargas Llosa and Fujimori
On April 8, 1990, general elections were held. IU reached 8% and Izquierda Socialista obtained 5% of the vote. FREDEMO came in first place with 33% of the vote followed by Cambio 90 with 29%, while APRA came in third place with 22% of the vote. Mario Vargas Llosa (FREDEMO) and Alberto Fujimori Fujimori (Cambio 90) were the two candidates who advanced to the second round of elections. The electoral defeat expressed the growing distancing of the IU from the most important social movements and the division of the left.
