Mutilation of peasants' hands in Iguaín
Shining Path mutilated hands of peasants and children in Iguain to prevent voting in elections.
One month before the 1990 general elections, the Shining Path barbarically attacked the district of Iguaín. The subversives mutilated the hands of peasants, among them children, with the intention of causing terror in the population so that they would not go to vote. At the hacienda, an armed group dressed in civilian clothes took two girls, Juana Serrano (16) and Dolores Ruiz (15), raped them and then shot them to death. They then massacred the whole family: the boy Silverio Serrano Yaranga (12) and his little sister Teresa Serrano Arone (13). All of them had their hands cut off.
