Formation of the Special Intelligence Group (GEIN)
In March 1990 the Special Intelligence Group (GEIN) was created within the DIRCOTE with the objective of capturing the leadership of the PCP-SL. Between June and September it managed to capture 80% of the Shining Path propaganda department.
The Special Intelligence Group (GEIN) was formed within the DIRCOTE (Directorate Against Terrorism) with the explicit objective of capturing the leadership of the PCP-SL (Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path). This specialized group made significant progress in a short period of time. In the short term, between June and September 1990, the GEIN managed to capture 80% of the propaganda department of the PCP-SL. The group achieved for the first time a real lead with documents, maps, reports on military actions and plans that would later lead to the capture of the Shining Path leadership.
