Murder of the Mayor of Cachachi in Tambería

On February 5, 1990, the mayor of the district of Cachachi, Eleuterio Roncal, was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the town of Tambería Cachachi, Cajabamba province. This assassination was part of the Shining Path's strategy of systematic elimination of local authorities who resisted their political-military project or who did not collaborate with their directives. The event occurred in the context of the Shining Path offensive in the northern provinces of Cajamarca, where the PCP-SL sought to consolidate its presence through the destruction of agrarian cooperatives and the elimination of resistant authorities. This assassination adds to a series of executions of mayors and other authorities in the region during the 1989-1990 period.
