Murder of Tomás Evangelista Carranza

Tomas Evangelista Carranza, a non-teaching worker at the San Cristobal de Huamanga National University and a militant of the Peruvian Aprista Party (PAP), was murdered on January 28, 1990. The crime was perpetrated by the Shining Path PCP while he was giving classes at the university. This assassination occurred in a context of intense violence in the city of Huamanga, especially between the end of 1989 and the beginning of 1990, coinciding with the national elections. The National University San Cristóbal de Huamanga was a privileged space for violence during this period, registering the highest number of victims in its three departments between 1989 and 1991.
