Death of Olivares in Sollocota
Olivares (el Gringo), Shining Path leader, dies in confrontation with police in Sollocota
In the early morning of January 20, 1990, Olivares (known as El Gringo) leads a column of some 30 PCP-SL insurgents to attack the SAIS Sollocota. The National Police detachment manages to repel the assault. The forces of the order undertake the pursuit and towards noon they reach the group headed by Gringo who dies accompanied by four of his comrades. The capital's press described him as the most bloodthirsty terrorist ever heard of in the Altiplano.
