On January 9, 1990, retired Army General and former Minister of Defense Enrique López Albújar was assassinated by a commando of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) in the district of San Isidro, Lima. This selective assassination was part of the MRTA's strategy of carrying out military actions against specific targets linked to the armed forces and the Peruvian State. The attack occurred in a context of intensifying political violence in Metropolitan Lima, where both the MRTA and the PCP-Sendero Luminoso were multiplying their actions in the capital. This type of selective assassinations against military and civilian authorities characterized the period of greatest violence in Lima between 1989 and 1992.
