Death threats to families to prevent the escape of recruits

The Shining Path threatened to kill families of recruits who tried to escape.

The Shining Path constantly threatened the recruited youths, telling them 'you are going to cry, you have to fight, you have to be excellent like us' and 'don't even try to escape, because we are going to die and so are our families'. The murders were in front of everyone and they told them 'this is how we are going to kill you too, with your whole family if you try to escape'. One young man says that he was chosen to come to Ayacucho to buy things but he could not stay because his mother and brothers were in the camp: 'if he did not return, they would suddenly kill them'.
