In January 1990, the main column of the Shining Path PCP suffered a decisive setback in Puno. The forces of law and order caught up with the subversive column and in the confrontation five subversives were killed, among them their military commander. This event marked an important turning point in the presence of the PCP-SL in the Puno region. Despite this setback, a certain upturn was observed in 1991, above all in urban annihilation commandos and later in the countryside.
