Establishment of Caynarachi-Shanusi detachment

In 1990, the MRTA established the Caynarachi-Shanusi military detachment in Pongo de Caynarachi, San Martin, as part of its structure of eight zones of territorial control in the Northeastern Front. This zone became a strategic retreat area for MRTA forces in the face of the advance of the Shining Path and state repression.

MRTA established the Caynarachi-Shanusi military detachment in 1990 as part of its territorial control structure in the department of San Martin. This detachment was part of the eight zones controlled by MRTA in the Northeastern Front, with an area of influence in the Pongo de Caynarachi. The detachment operated in a strategic zone that was later used for military and political training activities. By the end of 1991, following the advance of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and the Peruvian Army's repression, MRTA military forces retreated mainly to the Mayo Medio and Pongo de Caynarachi-Shanusi areas.
