In 1990, the PCP-SL (Shining Path) carried out a first massacre in the settler community of Monterrico, located in the Tsiriari valley, Mazamari district, Satipo province. This attack was part of a series of selective assassinations that the PCP-SL committed that year in several colonist communities in the area, including Union, Santa Isabel, Dos de Mayo and San Francisco de Cubaro. The Monterrico massacre was the first of three that would occur in this community during the internal armed conflict, followed by two other massacres in 1993 and 1994. This event occurred in a context where the PCP-SL had intensified its control over the province of Satipo and was pressuring communities to organize into peasant patrols.
