Sympathy of settler communities towards the MRTA in the Tsiriari valley
In 1990, settler communities in the Tsiriari valley, Mazamari, showed sympathy for the MRTA as a protection strategy against the PCP-SL. The Dos de Mayo community became committed to the MRTA following the change of allegiance of one of its members who had left the Shining Path.
In 1990, in the Tsiriari valley, Mazamari district, some colonist communities developed some sympathy for the MRTA, since this group offered them protection from the PCP-SL. In the colonist community of Dos de Mayo, a villager named MC, who had previously sympathized with PCP-SL, decided to support the MRTA after returning from Huancayo in 1990. Upon returning to Dos de Mayo, MC committed his entire community to the MRTA to protect himself from PCP-SL, as he was wanted by the 'reds' for having betrayed them. This alliance with the MRTA represented a survival strategy in the face of the threat posed by the Shining Path in the area.
