Election of Juan Santiago as general secretary of the mine workers union

Juan Santiago was elected general secretary of the Cerro de Pasco mining union in 1990. The same night of his election, Shining Path tried to assassinate him, but under his leadership, ten alleged Shining Path members were captured.

In 1990, Juan Santiago was elected secretary general of the Cerro de Pasco mine workers union. On the night of the same day of his election, a Shining Path group attempted to assassinate him at his home, but they were unsuccessful. Under his leadership, the union was able to detect the presence of Shining Path members in the most remote camps and planned an action that led to the capture of ten suspected Shining Path members. Santiago organized approximately twenty people he trusted, and with the support of more than sixty people, he was able to confront the Shining Path threat. Due to these actions, he was requisitioned by the authorities.
