Installation of military base in San Juan de Jarpa
In 1990, during the Fujimori administration, a military base was installed in San Juan de Jarpa as part of the counter-offensive against the Shining Path. This installation, along with other military bases in the region, contributed significantly to the reduction of the Shining Path presence in the Canipaco valley.
Under Alberto Fujimori's government, a military base was installed in the San Juan de Jarpa district in 1990 as part of the state counter-offensive against the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the Canipaco valley. This installation was part of a broader military deployment that included bases in Chicche (Vista Alegre Annex) that same year, and later in 1991 in the districts of Chongos Bajo, Huamancaca Chico and Chupaca. The military presence marked a turning point in the region, since after the installation of these bases, particularly the one in the Vista Alegre annex in 1990, the PCP-SL's presence decreased significantly throughout the Canipaco area. The army deployed important tracking actions throughout the valley, even reaching the most remote communities, which caused the almost complete disappearance of the PCP-SL in the area.
