Takeover of Juanjuí by MRTA

On December 24, 1989, the MRTA took the city of Juanjuí as part of the Fernando Valladares Military Campaign, simultaneously carrying out raids in Tarapoto, Saposoa, Moyobamba and Rioja to criticize the policies of the Fujimori government.

On December 24, 1989, the MRTA took the city of Juanjuí as part of the Fernando Valladares Military Campaign. This operation was aimed at criticizing the economic and political conditions imposed by the government of Alberto Fujimori. The action in Juanjuí was coordinated with simultaneous incursions in other cities of San Martín, including Tarapoto, Saposoa, Moyobamba and Rioja. This takeover was part of a new MRTA offensive in the San Martin region that had begun in 1989 with the takeover of other towns such as Pilluana, Shapaja, San Jose de Sisa, Peleje, Papalaya and Pacaypasa.
