U.S. invasion of Panama

The United States invaded Panama on December 20, 1989. The Peruvian government rejected the invasion, temporarily withdrew its diplomatic representation in Washington and suspended anti-drug operations with U.S. cooperation.

On December 20, 1989, the United States invaded Panama. The Peruvian government, after learning of the invasion, expressed its rejection and temporarily withdrew its diplomatic representation in Washington. On December 22 and 23, the Peruvian Executive summoned an extraordinary legislature to deal with the situation created by the U.S. invasion of Panama and to denounce the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance (TIAR) "for having lost its moral authority and validity". On December 22, the US State Department confirmed that the Peruvian government communicated the suspension of the anti-drug operations it had undertaken with US cooperation due to the invasion of Panama.
