Confrontation at Iscozacín
Clash between the Peruvian Army and the MRTA in a subversive camp in Iscozacín (El Chaparral), district of Palcazu, Oxapampa. The attack resulted in 43 subversives dead and one military personnel killed, constituting a significant blow to the MRTA.
On December 17, 1989, near Puerto Victoria in Yanesha territory, an Army patrol located and attacked an MRTA subversive camp, causing numerous casualties while others fled the area. An Army communiqué informed that the confrontation took place exactly in the area known as 'El Chaparral', located in Iscozacin, district of Palcazu. According to the official report, 43 subversives and one soldier were killed. This attack represented a hard blow for the MRTA, occurring a few days after the assassination of Alejandro Calderon, president of ANAP, and was part of a series of setbacks suffered by the organization at the end of 1989.
