Confrontation in Puerto Victoria
Clash between the Army and the MRTA in a subversive camp near Puerto Victoria that resulted in 43 subversives dead and one military personnel killed. The military attack occurred in the area of 'El Chaparral' in Iscozacin.
On December 17, 1989, near Puerto Victoria, in the territory of the Yanesha ethnic group, an Army patrol located and attacked a subversive camp of the MRTA, causing numerous casualties while others fled the area. An Army communiqué informed that the confrontation took place exactly in the area known as 'El Chaparral', located in Iscozacin, district of Palcazu. According to the official report, 43 subversives and one military officer were killed. This confrontation represented a hard blow for the MRTA, occurring a few days after the assassination of the native leader Alejandro Calderon.
