Army attack on MRTA camp in Puerto Victoria

An Army patrol attacked an MRTA camp near Puerto Victoria, resulting in the death of 43 subversives and one soldier according to the official report. This operation was part of the counter-subversive actions in the central jungle.

On December 17, 1989, near Puerto Victoria in the district of Puerto Bermudez, in territory of the Yanesha ethnic group, an Army patrol located and attacked an MRTA camp. According to the official report, 43 subversives and one soldier were killed. This attack was part of a series of military operations against MRTA in the central jungle area. The event occurred in a context where the MRTA had already suffered important setbacks, including the capture of its leader Victor Polay in Huancayo on February 31, 1989 and the annihilation of columns in Molinos (Jauja) on April 28, 1989.
