Disappearance of Angel Escobar

Angel Escobar, leader of the Federation of Peasant Communities and vice-president of the Huancavelica Human Rights Commission, was kidnapped in the center of the city in December 1989 and subsequently disappeared, shocking the local population.

Angel Escobar, leader of the Federation of Peasant Communities and vice-president of the Human Rights Commission of the department of Huancavelica, was kidnapped in the middle of the urban center of the city of Huancavelica in December 1989. The kidnapping occurred during the period of the 1989-1990 Shining Path offensive, when the PCP-SL intensified its violent actions in the province. After his kidnapping, Angel Escobar disappeared and his case deeply shocked the population of Huancavelica. This occurred in the context of an escalation of violence that included multiple selective assassinations of authorities, leaders and human rights defenders in the region.
