On November 19, 1989, an armed group of the PCP-SL attacked the facilities of the Pichis Palcazu Special Project (PEPP) in Puerto Bermudez. During the attack, the subversives looted some local stores and stole money deposited in the Agrarian Bank. This action was part of the PCP-SL's strategy to dispute the area with the MRTA, which already had a presence in the area. Testimonies mention that there were confrontations between both subversive groups, although they are difficult to verify.
