On November 19, 1989, an armed group of the PCP-SL attacked the facilities of the Pichis Palcazu Special Project (PEPP) in Puerto Bermudez. During the attack, the subversives looted some local stores and stole money deposited in the Agrarian Bank. This attack took place in a context where the PCP-SL was beginning to dispute the area with the MRTA, after the inhabitants became aware of the presence of PCP-SL subversives around the districts of Puerto Bermudez and Palcazu in October and November 1989. The attack on the PEPP was one of the first significant actions of the PCP-SL in this area of the central jungle.
