In November 1989, an armed group that identified itself as belonging to the MRTA raided the Roncha annex, located in Bajo Cunas. The group tortured and killed three people: Luciano Legua Quinto, Juan Quinto Arana and Damaso Mucha Estrada, accusing them of belonging to the PCP-SL. This event was part of a series of counter-subversive actions in which state agents used the alibi of identifying themselves as members of the MRTA to carry out operations against presumed Shining Path members. The same scheme was repeated in other localities in the area during the same period.
