Murder of Enrique Castilla Linares
Enrique Castilla Linares, union leader of the 'La Unión' Textile Factory and member of the PUM, was assassinated by Shining Path supporters on October 31, 1989 in Ate Vitarte. The crime occurred when he was preparing to reject an armed strike called by the PCP-SL.
On October 31, 1989, a group of hikers assassinated Enrique Castilla Linares, leader of the Union of Workers of the 'La Union' Textile Factory in Ate Vitarte. Castilla was a member of the PUM (Partido Unificado Mariateguista) and had the recognition of the union sector. He was preparing to reject the armed strike that the PCP-SL had called for November 3 of that year. This assassination was part of the Shining Path strategy of attacking union leaders who opposed their tactics of total confrontation in the East Zone of Lima.
