Confrontation in Antauta

Armed confrontation in Antauta, Melgar, between law enforcement forces and the PCP-Sendero Luminoso that resulted in the death of 14 hikers on October 10, 1989.

On October 10, 1989, an armed confrontation took place in the district of Antauta, province of Melgar, between law enforcement forces and the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. This confrontation resulted in the death of 14 Shining Path members. On the same day, another PCP-SL attack took place in the district of Ananea, province of San Antonio de Putina, where they attacked the installations of Minero Peru in the Gavilan de Oro mine, causing the death of 9 policemen, a private security guard, the deputy mayor and the district governor. This event was part of the most intense period of the internal armed conflict in Puno, with 1989 being one of the most violent years with 88 reported victims.
