Murder of Armida Gutiérrez de Rivas and Ernesto Rivas Berrocal

Two PCP-SL militants assassinated the mayor of Churcampa, Armida Gutiérrez de Rivas, and her husband Ernesto Rivas Berrocal, both APRA militants, weeks before the municipal elections. A month later, their son was executed by the military in the main square.

On October 9, 1989, two PCP-SL militants assassinated Armida Gutiérrez de Rivas, mayor of the province of Churcampa, and her husband Ernesto Rivas Berrocal, both members of the Peruvian Aprista Party. The assassination occurred weeks before the municipal elections, as part of the PCP-SL's strategy of selective assassinations. As an example of the irrationality of the war, a month later, on November 15, Víctor Salvador Rivas Gutiérrez, son of the murdered mayoress, and Jesús Manuel Pérez Guillén were executed by military personnel of the Counter-Subversive Base of Churcampa with rifle shots in the middle of the main square of Churcampa.
