In October 1989, the Shining Path PCP raided the town of Huayllay, district of Luricocha, province of Huanta, Ayacucho. During this incursion, the subversive organization killed 12 people. This attack was part of a series of massacres perpetrated by the PCP-SL in the northern part of Ayacucho (Huanta, Huamanga, La Mar) between 1989 and 1990, a period in which the subversive columns tried to recover spaces lost to the peasant patrols. The years 1989 and 1990 coincided with bad harvests, which accentuated the peasants' rejection of the PCP-SL columns that tried to obtain food from the population.
