Assassination of Mayor Fermín Darío Azparrent Taipe

Fermín Darío Azparrent Taipe, mayor of the Provincial Council of Huamanga for Izquierda Unida, was murdered in his hardware store in the afternoon. He had been the victim of multiple threats from both the PCP-SL and the paramilitary group 'Rodrigo Franco'. He was attacked by two men who shot him, stole the money from the sales and a gun. The attackers fled in a red Volkswagen car. The PCP-SL claimed responsibility for the assassination the same day in a radio communiqué, threatening other political candidates. Azparrent had organized a peace march in 1988 and denounced the Cayara massacre.
