On July 29, 1989, a PCP-SL column accompanied by a 'mass' of approximately 200 inhabitants from neighboring towns entered Huariaca. During this incursion, the Shining Path militants killed the community president and the municipal agent. This attack was part of the PCP-SL's strategy to destroy the existing system of authorities in the department of Pasco. The district of Huariaca had experienced the first Shining Path incursions since 1985, being an obligatory transit point for PCP-SL militants on their way to neighboring districts in the province of Ambo in Huánuco.
