On July 18, 1989, Professor Luis Aguilar Romaní was mortally wounded by alleged Shining Path supporters in the teachers' lounge of the Faculty of Pedagogy of the National University of Central Peru (UNCP). This attack occurred in the context of a bloody struggle between the PCP-SL and the MRTA at the UNCP during 1989. Previously, on March 12, 1989, PCP-SL militants had assassinated a police officer in the university city, and on April 28 they assassinated three students of APRA affiliation on the same campus. The attack against professor Aguilar Romaní was part of the escalation of violence that characterized the Shining Path presence at the university during that year.
