Walter Huayllani, student and leader of the Communist Party-Unity of the UNSAAC, was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso on July 7, 1989. This assassination occurred a few days after the murder of nursing student Magnolia Zuñiga on July 2 of the same year. Both crimes were part of the Shining Path strategy of achieving greater repercussion through selective assassinations in the university city of Cuzco. The assassination of Huayllani was part of the campaign of selective annihilation that the PCP-SL carried out against political and student leaders who opposed its people's war project.
