On July 3, 1989, the MRTA carried out an incursion in the town of Shapaja as part of its military actions in the department of San Martin. This incursion was part of a series of actions by the Northeastern Front (FNO) during the process of rebuilding the Tupacamarista Army after the repression suffered between the end of 1987 and the beginning of 1988. The action in Shapaja was preceded by other incursions in March of the same year in Pilluana and Shapaja itself, and followed by the capture of Pacaypasa in November. These military actions were intended to demonstrate the active presence of the MRTA in the region and to support the regional strikes organized by FEDIP-SM.
