Murder of Magnolia Zuñiga

Magnolia Zuñiga, a nursing student, was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso on July 2, 1989 in the university city of Cuzco. Her death was part of a Shining Path terror campaign that included the assassination of other students and university leaders.

On July 2, 1989, nursing student Magnolia Zuñiga was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the university city of Cuzco. This murder occurred a few days before the assassination of another student, Walter Huayllani, leader of the Communist Party-Unity of the UNSAAC, who was executed on July 7. These crimes were part of a terror campaign by the PCP-SL to achieve greater repercussion in the region. The murder of Magnolia Zuñiga took place in a context of intensifying Shining Path violence in the department of Cuzco, where the group sought to establish its presence through selective assassinations of students and political leaders.
