On June 26, 1989, the brothers José Carlos Mansilla (Mining Engineering) and Alexander Mansilla (Education), sons of a teacher at the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga (UNSCH), disappeared. This occurred in the context of a wave of selective assassinations perpetrated by paramilitary groups and military intelligence agents undercover in the city of Huamanga. The disappearance of the Mansilla brothers was part of a series of systematic attacks against members of the university community between 1988 and 1991. Paramilitary groups operated with impunity in the city, targeting especially students, teachers and UNSCH workers.
